Something Grand
Greetings from Arizona!
We’re just about to pack up and head back to Pennsylvania after a great Spring Break. I love that I can sit here with all of you to reflect and share a piece of our adventure.
The Grand Canyon!
After taking about a thousand photographs, I realized the impossibility of capturing its magnificence.
Millions of years of erosion. 1 mile deep. 277 miles long. 18 miles wide. 2 billion year old rocks resting on the bottom. 2 billion years!
A woman standing next to me with her jaw on the ground as well said, “Doesn’t it make you feel small?”
I couldn’t fully process her question. I was distracted by all of the people and activity, the inability to put down my camera, and the constant reminders to my children to STAY AWAY FROM THE EDGE!
Did I feel small? Of course. We were like pebbles above that massive rock. But there was much more to what I was feeling, and I yearned for some alone time in prayer to bring it into focus.
The next morning, I slipped out toward the quiet canyon to hang out with Jesus and watch the sunrise.
As I sat in wonder, just a few feet from the rim, the sun’s brilliant glow illuminated the canyon… one section at a time. It was like flipping on a panel of light switches.
God’s creation- consistently miraculous, mysterious and marvelous!
I no longer felt small amidst such enormity. I felt connected. Connected to Jesus, as if He were sitting right beside me on that rock. Connected to the history and the future of our great earth. Connected to the millions of people from across centuries and across the globe who have walked the same path.
Isn’t it fascinating to think of all that has gone before us and all that is yet to come?
Each one of us plays a role in a remarkable story. We are part of something exponentially bigger than we can even imagine. Dare I say… something grand!
Sending sunshine to you all:)
And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. Ephesians 3:18
