Choosing Gratitude over Disappointment
“Let’s replace some of our sadness with gratitude.” These words have reappeared and blessed my life countless times since I first heard them spoken. Many years ago, a friend shared this sentiment as she courageously spoke at her mom’s funeral. She reminded us that the flip side of heartbreak is overflowing love.
As I quietly gear up for Christmas this week, with changes beyond recognition, I am holding tight to those words. And I am grateful. Grateful for…
The deep love that makes separation so challenging. The people under my roof and those celebrating safely on their own this year. The traditions that can be carried out and the ones we will remember with a smile. The technology that drives me absolutely bonkers but serves to keep us connected. The growing appreciation of the simple things so easily taken for granted. And most of all, I am grateful for the unwavering and hope-filled message of Christmas—the greatest gift of all, accessible wherever we are. “Life itself was in Him, and this life gives light to everyone.” John 1:4
Wishing you and your families a Christmas filled with love and light. While things may not look quite as we had hoped, my prayer is that we choose gratitude over disappointment.
This year and always, may we embrace the blessings in front of us, celebrate all that is out of our reach yet close to our hearts, and look forward with joy to the road ahead.
Peace and hugs,
“Gratitude turns what we have into enough.” Aesop
